Blackpool Sands. Just 5 minutes drive away, it's our favourite beach as you get secure parking, clean sand, a great organic cafe and a beach shop. The kids love the rock pooling! |
Dartmouth Harbour. One of the best natural harbours in the UK. Find out more here. |
Dartmouth is a year round destination with a great diversity. We have fallen in love with it and hope that you do too - it is definitely one of those places you can keep coming back to and discover more each time. It has a remarkable location - nestling on the hillside by natural deepwater harbour, with breathtaking sights all around and the town has a unique style. There is so much choice and so many contrasts. You will find yourselves in the middle of glorious countryside yet in a busy bustling town that has a great cosmopolitan air. Just a few miles outside of Dartmouth either on foot, bicycle, car or bus you reach nearby villages in deepest rural Devon where it can feel as if time has stood still.
Alternatively, catch the higher or lower ferry across the estuary to Kingswear and take a walk into Agatha Christie's country estate or potter up the river to Dittisham (Dit'sum) and watch the sailors float by from the pub.
Coleton Fishacre across the water is a fascinating glimpse back in time at a glorious old English Country House with gardens, recently acquired by the National Trust it's a great day out.
Take a deep sea diving expedition and haul in a Marlin ! Or sit back on the deck and watch the world be busy. The Britannia Royal Naval College holds a commanding position high over the estuary and can be seen from the deck. The close ties to the College ensure that the Dartmouth Regatta in August each year always boasts the finest Military aircraft displays including the Red Arrows.
Dartmouth is famous for it's heritage, hundreds of years of trade, fishing, smuggling, pirates - the lot ! This means the buildings and the pubs are gorgeous, we favour the Dartmouth Arms on Bayards Cove pictured above, where you can take a pie and a pint onto the wharf and drop a line to catch crabs, indeed crabbing is an artform in Dartmouth.
The Cherub Inn is Dartmouths oldest building and is home to the infamous Dirtymouth Newspaper written by Christof the barman - be sure to pick up a copy in the Cherub, in Alf Resco's or elsewhere in the town, it's an hilarious Viz-style monthly expose of life in Dartmouth.
Alf Resco's is a legend in it's own breakfast, a must for any visitor, it's a 2 minute walk from Dartmouth House & offers a unique dining experience.
A new restaurant is coming to Dartmouth - Mitch Tonks the celebrity chef is opening a Fishworks right on the embankment a 5 minute walk from Dartmouth House, see - www.fishworks.co.uk for more information.
